Resist the urge to plan your next response while they’re speaking. Instead, focus fully on their words, tone, and body language. Let their story unfold without interruption. - Ask Thoughtful Questions
Go beyond surface-level conversation by inviting reflection: “What’s been on your mind lately?” or “How did that make you feel?” Thoughtful questions show genuine curiosity and encourage openness. - Mirror and Validate
Subtly mirroring their tone or body language creates rapport. Validation goes a step further: acknowledging their experience without judgment, e.g., “That sounds really difficult. I can see why you’d feel that way.” - Hold Space
Sometimes, the most profound gift you can offer is silence. Allow pauses to breathe without rushing to fill them. This gives others the freedom to process their thoughts and emotions. - Reflect and Engage

- Gestures: Fidgeting, tapping, or rubbing hands can signal nervousness, while steady, deliberate movements often reflect calmness.
- Proximity: Moving closer may indicate trust or affection, while stepping back can suggest a need for space.
- Micro Expressions: Brief, involuntary facial expressions can reveal emotions that someone might be trying to mask. For instance, a flicker of sadness or irritation may appear and disappear in an instant.

- Eyes: Are they maintaining eye contact (engagement) or looking away (uncertainty, discomfort)? Notice the softness or intensity in their gaze.
- Mouth: A tight-lipped smile might conceal tension, while a relaxed, genuine smile often engages the eyes. Subtle movements in the mouth’s corners can hint at emotions like worry or joy.
- Brow: A furrowed brow often signals concern or concentration, while raised eyebrows can indicate surprise or skepticism.
Tone of Voice: The Emotional Undercurrent
- Tone: Is their voice steady and calm (confidence) or wavering and sharp (stress or agitation)? A softer tone may signal vulnerability, while an elevated tone might reflect excitement or urgency.
- Pacing: Fast speech can suggest anxiety or excitement, while slower pacing often conveys thoughtfulness or caution.
- Pauses: Moments of silence can carry meaning—perhaps hesitation, reflection, or a need for space.
Practice: Begin observing these cues in your daily interactions. What do they reveal about the person’s unspoken feelings? How do they align with their words?
