Noticing the Small Things: Cultivating Presence in Everyday Life

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, we often rush from one task to the next, barely stopping to breathe, let alone notice the world around us. But what if, in the small details we overlook, lies the potential for profound experiences and connections?

This post is about noticing the small things—the sights, sounds, and moments that surround us every day. Developing this skill isn’t just about being mindful; it’s about unlocking the richness of life that’s often hidden in plain sight.

The Power of Noticing

A friend of mine recently shared a story about walking near a secluded beach with his family. They stopped for a moment to rest, and in that pause, he noticed an Aboriginal carving in a tree that meant “Resting Place.”

That small detail—simple yet profound—transformed the moment. It wasn’t just a pause in a busy day; it became an opportunity to connect with something deeper, a reflection of the importance of slowing down—not just for him, but for anyone who hears about the story.

It’s a marvelous catalyst for mindful awareness, self-reflection, and meditative thought. Stories like this remind us that the act of noticing can ripple outward, inspiring others to slow down and observe the beauty in their own lives.

Cultivating the Mindset of Noticing

Noticing small things is about being present, and it starts with slowing down. Here are a few ways to begin:

  • Put the phone down. Give yourself space to disconnect from screens and reconnect with the world around you.
  • Turn the TV off. Quiet the noise and make room for observation and reflection.
  • Go for a walk. The environment doesn’t matter—a busy city is just as good as a forest. What’s important is how you engage with your surroundings.
    • In a city, notice the rhythm of footsteps, the hum of traffic, the patterns in graffiti, or the details of architecture.
    • In nature, observe the rustle of leaves, the play of light and shadow, or the scent of the air.

Practice Seeing, Listening, and Savoring

Noticing is a skill that can be honed, and when you’re good at it, you can deploy it at will. The key is to sharpen and engage all your senses—because when you pay attention, the nuances you uncover can be truly surprising.

  • Really Look. When you walk into a room or a new space, pause for a moment. What’s different? What stands out? Look closely at things you normally ignore, like the way light reflects on a window, the grain of wood, or the texture of a building’s facade.

  • Really Listen. Stop and tune in to the sounds around you. The rhythm of the city, the chirping of birds, the rustle of leaves, or the faint sound of wind—it’s all part of the texture of life. What can you hear when you truly focus?

  • Really Savor. Engage your sense of taste and smell when you eat or drink. Notice the interplay of flavors and scents—your sense of taste is greatly augmented by your olfactory sense. Pause to experience the warmth of spices, the richness of textures, or the subtle sweetness in a sip of tea.

Your senses work together to create a complete experience of the world. By consciously engaging with them, you not only notice the details but also deepen your connection to the present moment. The more you practice, the more vibrant and meaningful life becomes.

Side Note:
I first encountered Rob Walker’s The Art of Noticing through Sam Harris’s Waking Up app. Waking Up is a fantastic way to learn about mindfulness and meditation, and it’s been a transformative resource for me. Flick me a message if you’d like a free month on the app.

Off the back of Rob’s pieces on Waking Up, I subsequently read his book The Art of Noticing, which is packed with practical ideas to help you see the world in new and exciting ways. A full review of the book is coming soon in an upcoming post—stay tuned!

The Value of Presence

The true value of presence and mindfulness lies in these small, intentional acts of noticing. They anchor us to the moment, connect us to our surroundings, and offer opportunities to find meaning in unexpected places.

It doesn’t matter where you are—profound experiences can emerge from the mundane when you take the time to really notice. A quiet backyard, a busy street, or even your own living room can offer endless opportunities to discover something new.

What’s Next?

Noticing the small things is just one part of cultivating presence. In a future post, we’ll explore interpersonal presence—how we can bring this same mindful attention to our relationships, fostering deeper connections with the people in our lives.

For now, take a breath. Put the phone down, turn the TV off, and go for a walk. Whether it’s through a crowded city or a peaceful forest, just listen. Just look. And notice. You might be surprised by the profound experiences waiting for you in the details.

This will be my last daily post. From now on, I’ll be sharing new posts weekly to give these ideas time to sink in and grow. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic—what’s something small you’ve noticed recently that made a big impact?
